PROS AND CONS
The Swimergy
TM Swim System improves over mechanical swimming
machines in many ways:
SWIMMING ADVANTAGES
- You can swim more naturally, changing your pace or stroke
without having to adjust any machinery.
- Swim with a partner: since there is no machinery in the water
there is plenty of room for two people.
- Rough water is smoothed by the anti-wave features (pat.
pending), for a more comfortable swim.
- This is one system you can never outswim, no matter how
powerful a swimmer you are. Just tighten up a bit on the elastic as you
develop more strength, and pour it on.
- The swim is more peaceful and relaxing, as you are not
bothered by annoying mechanical noises.
- Training in a current-free pool will increase strength and burn
more calories, as it takes more effort to pull the hands through
water that is moving more slowly past the body.
- Use it as a family pool when not working out. Because no
machinery clutters the pool (some swimming machines take up over 50% of
the pool space with propeller housings and ducts (presented as
"benches")) there is enough room for the family to play and relax.
EQUIPMENT ADVANTAGES
- The SwimergyTM Swim System needs
no electricity for swimming. Over the twenty year life span of an
average swimming machine, the savings could amount to upwards of ten
thousand dollars, assuming five hundred dollars a year in energy costs
(at 2005 prices, an optimistic estimate). The cost of eventual repairs
to all that machinery is not included as it cannot be easily
estimated.
As the SwimergyTM Swim System filter
system is highly energy-efficient and uses only a minimal amount
of electricity (about 500W peak energy use with the light and the
chlorine generator on), the additional expense of an electrician's
services also is avoided, as the unit can usually be plugged into the
nearest outlet (respecting local electrical codes, of
course).
Because of its reduced size and super-efficient pump,
the Swimergy
TM Swim System not only uses far less energy
than a swimming machine, it also uses far less energy than a regular
swimming pool. The graph below shows the difference:
COMPARISON OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Swimming pool: 15 kW/hours per day
Swimming machine: 10 kW/hours per day
Swimergy Swim System: 1 kW/hour per day
- There is no machinery to take up valuable space and limit
motion inside the pool.
- The cost of buying and operating complex machinery is totally
eliminated, saving thousands of dollars.
- It is easy to assemble. Since there is no complex machinery
involved, assembly is relatively quick and inexpensive
- There is not much that can break down, and repairs, if needed,
are simple. When the liner needs replacement, just unclip it and
drop another in, without needing to totally disassemble the
machinery(!).
What you cannot do in the
SwimergyTM Swim System that you
could in a mechanical counter-current swimming machine:
- You cannot swim unrestrained. Not for long, anyway, as you soon run
out of room.
- You cannot jog against a moving stream of water. If that is your
need, this system is not for you. You can, however, jog in place and do
any number of other water exercises which do not require the water to be
in motion.
- You cannot swim without a separate pair of shoes for each user, or a
complete set of sizes, so no one will feel left out. Extra shoes are $40
a pair.
Compared to a regular pool, the
SwimergyTM
Swim System needs a lot less space (see spec page)
and could be installed indoors or out, on ground or part-way in, or fully
in-ground.
Though quite a bit more expensive than a comparably
sized above-ground pool, the Swimergy TM Swim System is far more
durable and technologically sophisticated, provides a more comfortable
swim, and comes as a complete system.
However, if you can't or
don't want to buy a SwimergyTM Swim System, you can
still swim in a small pool by simply using the Riptide TM resistance
swimming device in a regular above-ground or in-ground pool. It is
available from Riptide
for well under a hundred dollars, including shipping.

| Water Current
|
The swim
current is generated by a paddlewheel located at the rear of the pool
and driven by an electric motor. The current moves up to 30,000 gallons
per minute. The current is 6 ft wide and 18" to 30" deep depending on the
model. The current is the entire width of the pool. |
|
The Endless Pool swim current is
generated by a 16" propeller inside a 21" x 18" steel box driven by a hydraulic
motor. The current moves up to 5,000 gallons per minute. The current is
21" wide and 18" deep and located in the middle of the Endless Pool. |
